About Jasmin Jahal

Dancing since the age of four, Jasmin has developed a thorough dance background in ballet, jazz and modern dance. This classical dance background has grounded her in discipline and planted a desire to promote her love for oriental dance in such a manner that she catapults it into a higher level of respect around the globe. She discovered Egyptian dance at the age of 18, and focused on studying the art form rather than simply the entertainment version of belly dance. She studied with the best resources available in the world, mentoring under Ibrahim Farrah, former dance master, author, editor of Arabesque Magazine, and director of the Near East Dance Theatre of New York, and secondly with Mahmoud Reda, former Vice Minister of Cultural Affairs in Egypt, artistic director of the world renown “Reda Dance Troupe”, author and actor in films throughout the Middle East.

Jasmin’s teaching style is based on 20 years of experience and is heralded as excellent. She has earned many awards of recognition by her peers, including “Instructor of the Year” by Zaghareet Magazine. Dance Teacher Magazine states “Jasmin Jahal takes the ancient art of Middle Eastern dance out of the restaurants and into the concert halls”. Worldwide, Jasmin conducts popular dance seminars at which students attend from near and far. She often appears on television in Europe and the U.S. Throughout the Midwest, she is often called upon to choreograph for various dance companies and museum exhibits, such as the Field Museum’s “Cleopatra” exhibit.

Jasmin lectures and performs in universities, cultural centers and arts festivals. Her home base is Chicago, where she directs the Windy City’s center for oriental dance, the Jasmin Jahal School of Dance. Under Jasmin’s guidance and instruction, this school has produced many talented professional oriental dancers and was honored by Chicago Magazine as a “Best of Chicago”. Jasmin also produces award-winning instructional and performance videotapes and DVDs for educational and entertainment purposes. In her spare time, she researches and writes articles about her art form, and directs the Jasmin Jahal Dance Company. Jasmin is one of the first American dancers to be invited to teach and perform at the famous Ahlan We Sahlan dance festival held in Cairo, Egypt. She is one of only 6 dancers to be awarded “Best Modern Egyptian Dancer” by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance.
